California passed Assembly Bill ("AB") 32 in 2006, establishing a statewide goal of reducing greenhouse gas ("GHG") emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. In 2009, Martinez became one of the first cities in Contra Costa County to adopt a Climate Action Plan ("CAP") to help the state meet this target. The state has since introduced further greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
The Martinez CAP outlines specific localized strategies to reduce GHGs, conserve energy and other natural resources, and prepare the community for potential climate change impacts.
The CAP also identifies key sectors that must be addressed to protect our community: transportation, energy, solid waste, water, and adaptation. To learn about the City's CAP implementation, check out our annual Climate Action Plan Recaps below.
