City of Martinez Opens Applications for Newly Established Diversity and Cultural Commission
For Immediate Release: September 23, 2024
Martinez, CA – The City of Martinez is pleased to announce the opening of the application period for the newly established Diversity and Cultural Commission. The Commission was adopted into ordinance on August 31, 2024, as part of the City’s ongoing efforts to implement its Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Roadmap.
The Diversity and Cultural Commission will aim to strengthen community building and engagement by highlighting diverse perspectives and cultural experiences. It will play a key role in advising the City Council on matters related to the City’s DEIB Roadmap, as well as in planning inclusive events, conducting community listening sessions, and providing feedback on City outreach and communications.
“The creation of the Diversity and Cultural Commission is a significant step in our commitment to fostering an inclusive and vibrant city,” said Mayor Brianne Zorn. “We are excited to engage residents from all of our communities in this important work and look forward to seeing the positive impact this Commission will have on Martinez.”
Commission Structure and Application Process
The Commission will consist of seven regular members appointed by the City Council. Six members will be residents or business owners within the City of Martinez, while one member will be a resident within the City’s Sphere of Influence, which consists of various unincorporated areas bordering the City limits. Additionally, two alternate members will be appointed. Members will serve without compensation, with terms set to expire on June 30, 2026, and June 30, 2028, depending on the appointment cycle.
Applications are now open, and interested individuals are encouraged to apply by December 13, 2024. The selection process will be led by Mayor Zorn and Councilmember Satinder S. Malhi before recommendations will come to the full City Council for consideration in January 2025.
Meetings of the Commission will be held quarterly; however, more meetings may occur as necessary.
Applications can be submitted online through the City’s Boards and Commissions web portal:
An orientation for interested candidates will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. to answer questions about the new commission and provide an overview of the application process.
